Copper Mountain Resort Information
Locals here have always valued a down-to-earth ski experience that puts friends, family, and a relaxed mountain atmosphere above anything else. That’s why they boast, if you have skied Copper Mountain, you’ve been raised on some of the best Colorado has to offer. It’s also why the Denver Front Range has always considered Copper Mountain the “home team,” and why ski and snowboard families from across the world call this resort home.
Just 75 miles from Denver, Copper Mountain Resort resides in a village-like location, feeling more like a neighborhood than a resort. Guests can enjoy cozy lodging within steps of the mountain, après ski entertainment, naturally divided terrain, exciting events and activities, and a friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable staff.
With 2,490 acres of skiable terrain, Copper Mountain is considered one of the largest ski and snowboard resorts in Colorado. The mountain is made up of over 140 marked trails, which include 21% beginner trails, 25% intermediate trails, 36% advanced trails, and 18% expert trails. A local’s favorite, Collage, is the longest run, cruising 1.7 miles from top to bottom. The longest pathway down is another local favorite, Soliloquy to Roundabout at 2.8 miles. And all this serviced by a total of 23 chair lifts from a six-person high speed lift to five high speed quads to five triple chairlifts, five double chairlifts, and seven surface lifts.
Copper Mountain Resort is also home to some of the best cross country skiing in the state. With over 15 miles of trails, skiers can make their way through the picturesque White River National Forest. Additional activities offered include ice skating, snowshoeing, tubing, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, and yes, even dog sledding! Guests can also find recreation at the resort’s racquet and athletic club, spa facilities, as well as shopping and dining.
The resort first opened in 1972 and was owned and operated by Intrawest until December 2009 when operations were sold to Powdr Corporation. Copper Mountain hosted the World Cup tour in 1976 with four alpine ski races – slalom and giant slalom for both men and women. Copper was a late-season replacement for Heavenly Valley in California, the original home for the World Cup, but was low on snow that year. Rosi Mittermaier of West Germany won both women’s races and wrapped up the 1976 overall slalom titles. In kind, Copper named Rosi’s Run after Rosi Mittermaier that same weekend.
Copper Mountain is also the starting point of Colorado’s Copper Triangle, a road cycling circuit that has been a part of the annual Colorado Cyclist Copper Triangle Alpine Cycling Classic since 2005. The event benefits the Davis Phinney Foundation, an organization committed to improving the lives of those with Parkinson’s disease.
In February 2009, Woodwood Camp opened a 20, 0000 square foot indoor ski and snowboard training facility at Copper, specifically dedicated to terrain park and pipe progression. The resort also became an official U.S. Ski Team downhill training venue in the 2011-2012 season.
Today, Copper Mountain Resort is home to such professional ski and snowboard events as the USASA Rev Tour, U.S. Grand Prix, Subaru Winterfest, USASA Rocky Mountain Series: Slopestyle Competition, USASA Rocky Mountain Series: Halfpipe & Slopestyle Competition, and the SIA Uphill/Downhill Race.
